James Forten was a freed slave. James begged his mom that he wanted to go to sea.
His dad died when he was seven, and now he was fourteen. His mom needed him to help her with the work that his dad used to do. He went to work after he finished Anthony Benezet's Quaker school at the age of nine. He worked at Benezet's store, then on Philadelphia's docks to be a sail maker because his dad was a sail maker. He wanted to go to sea because there was a war going on, and he wanted to fight in it. So his mom let him go. He sailed on a ship called the Royal Louis. He became a powder boy. His ship met a British ship, and there was a fight. His ship won the fight, and they came back to Philadelphia with the British ship being dragged behind his ship. All of Philadelphia came out to cheer. Now James knew what it felt like to be a hero. After that, he went back out to sea with the rest of his crew that survived the fight. This time, when they met another British ship, two other ships came out. The Royal Louis had to surrender. He was boarded on a prison ship, and being hauled away. The prison ship's captain had a son who saw James playing marbles, and the boy asked to join James.James beat the boy in marbles. But the boy liked James, so the boy asked his dad to set James free on England. The captain said that he would, if James told him where he came from. James said he wouldn't be a traitor to his country. James story is really long, so I won't tell you the rest.
