King John was a mean king. He was like a tyrant. He believed that kings were put on earth to be served. He always fought with the Pope. The Pope could make someone else king those days, so the Pope threatened the king that he would make someone else a king. So the king stopped having arguments with the Pope. Then he started on barons and noblemen. Finally the barons got fed up with him. So they brought him to an island called Runnymede in the Thames River. Then they made him sign an agreement called the Magna Carta. He signed it. It said that kings wee not allowed to do whatever they wanted. Magna Carta means great charter in Latin. After that, the people said that the king was supposed to serve them. Not they were supposed to serve the king.
